The Quiet Power Move That Built New York's Skyline.
In 1930, the Chrysler Building's architect secretly assembled a 185-foot steel spire inside the building's fire shaft — while a rival crew raced to finish 40 Wall Street as the tallest building in the world. Once the competitor topped out and declared victory, the Chrysler team hoisted the hidden spire through the roof in about 90 minutes and took the title on the spot.
It held the record for less than a year before the Empire State Building went up. But it's still one of the great quiet power moves in New York history.
